Persons with Developmental Disabilities (PDD) and Alberta Health Services (AHS) provide staffing support for adults and there is an expectation that clients will pay Room and Board and personal expenses. Both require a “Client Needs Assessment” to determine individual staff funding requirements.
PDD client support is available in Calgary and Edmonton in the form of Residential Care, Supported Independent Living, and Creative Supports (outreach service). Specific criteria is used to determine client need. For further information please contact your local PDD Regional Office.

Excel operates 21 PDD community living residences, 15 in Edmonton and 6 in Calgary. Individualized support and care services are provided based on each individual client’s support plan. Our residences are managed by Residential Care Coordinators, overseen by a Program Manager. Within each residence, well trained staff assist clients with meal preparation, medication administration, transportation, and supported access to community services such as the library, swimming pools. In addition staff deliver essential community skills training in the areas of health, hygiene, communication and behavioural support.
If your family member does not fit the PDD criteria then they may fit criteria for Alberta Health Services.
Alberta Health Services (AHS)
AHS refers adults to Excel with medical conditions such as Dementia, Alzheimer’s, Schizophrenia or Brain Injury. AHS will require a Client Needs Assessment and there is an expectation that clients will pay room & board and personal expenses. Excel operates 17 community based Personal and Special Care Homes in Edmonton that provide individualized support. All individuals in support have an Alberta Health Services care plan that is augmented by Person Centered Planning to help provide personalized supports in order to help them reach their full potential.
