What We Do
The purpose of the Excel Society's Community Support services Divisions is to enable individuals with disabilities to live as independently as possible in their community. We also work in partnership with the individual's family, social and professional support network to achieve the goals determined by the individual with a disability.
We are committed to providing a safe and pleasant environment that allows for positive social interaction among peers. In addition we offer a variety of residential and staffing models adapted to the individual's needs and desires, and provide quality, agency owned housing suited to the needs and means of the individuals.

What is Person Centered Planning (PCP)?
- Person Centered Planning is not a new concept.
- Many aspects of PCP are currently being used in day programs and supportive residences.
- It is a holistic approach focused on the individual.
- PCP requires a team of, primarily, unpaid supports with a genuine interest in the well being of the Focus Person to be successful.
- PCP assists individuals to develop community presence.

Differing Accommodation Models
Personal Care Homes
Personal Care Homes provide accommodation and care for people with moderate care requirements in a 24-hour staffed home. Clients live in a PCA staffed home with 6-10 adults receiving care. Personal Care Homes are an affordable supportive housing option for people on low incomes. Clients have private bedrooms and share bathrooms and common areas with others in the home. Clients receive room and board services, light housekeeping services, 24-hour availability of assistance and oversight with personal care and social and recreational support. Professional services include RN on-call and intermittent schedules services are provided and coordinated by a Supportive Living Case Manager. Health care and pharmacy services are provided in the community. Many Personal Care Homes are wheelchair accessible and able to support people with advanced physical care requirements.
Special Care Homes
Special Care Homes provide accommodation and care for people with unique care requirements in a 24-hour staffed home. Special Care Homes exist for people with physical disabilities, challenging behaviours and most recently for cultural groups such as the Aboriginal population. The particular environments and support services have been tailored to the populations served in each home. Special Care Homes offer an enhanced staffing model in contrast to conventional Personal Care Homes (e.g. higher staff-to-client ratios, client-specific staff training and liaison with professionals). Special Care Home environments are also enhanced according to client needs (e.g. wheelchair access and secured settings). Enhanced Designated Assisted Living
Enhanced Designated Assisted Living provides accommodation, flexible-24-hour on-site personal care and oversight with access to professional services.
The program was developed for people who would otherwise be on the waitlist for continuing care placement but who do not require continuous access to professional services. Most Enhanced DAL suites are contained within a larger senior's residence. Clients receive room and board services, light housekeeping services, 24-hour availability of assistance and oversight with personal care and social and recreational support. Professional services include 24-hour LPN oversight, RN on-call and intermittent scheduled services provided and coordinated by a Support Living Case Manager. Some Enhanced DAL sites are designed for clients with dementia. These settings are therapeutically designed to offer comfort and safety to clients who are fearful, who may be at risk for wandering and who need more structure and stimulation. Enhanced DAL clients may receive up to 3 hours of direct care per day.
Respite Care
Continuity of care is important with our clients living with Supportive Home Operators. However, vacations, training and health are just some of the circumstances that can result in periodic SHO absences. Excel's Respite Program basically replaces the Operators with specialized Creative Support Staff, hired and trained to meet emerging needs on a temporary basis. They bring recognition of the importance of relationship first and foremost. Individuals hired for Respite are screened to ensure they will maintain existing community supports that the SHO have in place. They are individuals who choose to appreciate the success of independent community living for those clients who are able.
